Below are the other characters of Frog in the Well:

(To learn about the frog emperor, go to the Home Page; or just click here!)

Meet Simon the dung beetle, the hero of the story. He is a "family-bug" with a wife (Wendy) and two pupae (kids). Simon is dissatisfied with his humdrum life and wants to seek adventure. But he is tied down by his job (dung ball) and family. Simon often fantasizes about climbing up the wall, an unlawful
act punishable by death.

This is the Fool. The earthworm pops up at the most unexpected places and during the most inappropriate moments. The blunt Fool is an odd character with a twisted view of the world. Only the Emperor finds the court jester's awkward and sometimes-abusive humor amusing.

Meet Isis, the monarch butterfly. This beautiful "fallen angel" gets sucked down into the well by a gust of wind and becomes the prisoner of the evil spider. She tells everyone the truth about the real world above and turns the Empire upside down! Simon, a married bug, falls in love with her!

Here is Archbishop Bugiardo, the Supreme Patriarch of the powerful Purity Church. In addition to being one of the Emperor's top advisors, he is also an influential member of his cabinet (called the Privy Council). Although he flatters the Emperor daily with his flowery poetry, he is really a very crafty and ruthless character.

Meet Sir John, the Emperor's prime minister. This old cricket was a respected member of the Senate during the Republican days. Now, under the monarchy, he is the Emperor's top advisor and chair of his Privy Council. This wise and scholarly bug is always in search of truth and knowledge; and his integrity and judgement are beyond reproach. But he is secretly despised by the Archbishop.

This is the Lord Chamberlain, the obsequious cockroach. He is in charge of all the court servants who would pamper the Emperor every day. Cockroaches are very skilled at the hospitality business. For example, Pierre, the royal chef, belongs to the kitchen cockroach species. Others species run roach motels and restaurants (i.e. Booger Kings and McBugg's).

Meet Bugsy the bounty hunter. Scorpions, assasin bugs, ambush bugs, and huntsman spiders are the professional killers. Sometimes, scorpions make excellent gladiators in the offical games. The games are held every full Moon, which is the time of the Savior's Festival. With much pomp and circumstance, the whole world would come out to celebrate the "birth" of the Emperor.

This is Tom, a saucer bug. Being the court butler, he works under the Lord Chamberlain. As Simon's good friend, Tom often sneaks him the Emperor's leftovers during mealtimes. Tom helps out Simon during his time of crisis and the two go through many adventures together.

During ancient times (the Dirt Ages) there was a colony of fire ants who wanted to enslave the entire world. They called their empire Scarletta. Luckily, the freedom-loving tribes were able to contain the fire ant army. In response, the fire ants built the Great Wall to keep the savages out, consequently dividing the world in half.

This is King Khuru, the first king of Scarletta. Before him, Scarletta was only ruled by queens. But when he was a young prince, his mother, Queen Beatrice, made Khuru commander in chief of the massive fire ant army, giving him the opportunity to prove himself as a leader. Through brutal warfare and cunning, he doubled the size of Scarletta and the Khuru Dynasty was born.
